Want to visit Tibet but don’t know which travel agency to choose? This is probably the most daunting question before setting off. There’s a lot of information online—some people recommend agencies with good reputations, while others highlight exceptionally low prices—and the more you look, the harder it is to decide.

Tibet is not just a trip—it’s a high-altitude challenge. Choosing the right travel agency directly affects your safety, pace, and overall experience along the way.
The following five key points will guide you in choosing a reliable Tibet travel agency, covering everything from reputation, price, the agency’s location, responsiveness, to itinerary design.

How to Choose a Tibet Travel Agency: 5 Key Points You Need to Know

① Check Reviews, but Read Them Wisely

Many people visit Dcard, PTT, Backpackers’ Inn, or Facebook groups to see which Tibet travel agencies others recommend. These reviews are certainly worth considering, but when reading them, don’t just focus on whether the trip was “fun”—also pay attention to the travel agency’s background: how long it’s been in business, what company owns it, and whether it has its own staff on the ground in Tibet.

Some small travel agencies or new brands offer itineraries that seem very comprehensive at exceptionally attractive prices. In such cases, it’s worth asking yourself: Since accommodations and transportation in Tibet are already quite expensive, is it really possible to offer a tour that’s purely sightseeing—with no shopping stops—at that price?

Another factor that’s often overlooked is on-site support. Flights in Tibet are frequently rescheduled due to weather, and altitude sickness can strike suddenly. If a travel agency doesn’t have a dedicated team on the ground, it can often only coordinate remotely when problems arise, which slows down the resolution process. Therefore, rather than focusing on price, we recommend prioritizing travel agencies that have been in business for a long time and have their own team based in Tibet.

② 看清楚价格包含什么

Tibet tours are inherently expensive, especially when it comes to lodging and transportation costs. If you come across a quote that’s unreasonably low but claims to be a “pure sightseeing tour with no shopping,” you should be extra cautious.

When comparing prices, first make sure you understand exactly what’s included: check whether admission fees, tips, meals, and guide fees are factored in.The most important factor is accommodations. The travel agency cannot, under any circumstances, substitute the hotel specified in the contract with a lower-quality one; if a change is truly necessary, it must be to a hotel of the same or higher standard, otherwise the traveler has the right to demand compensation.

In addition, it’s worth comparing the vehicle class, tour guide quality, and the ratio of tour guides to travelers. CITS Global Travel—China2Go—offers transparent pricing, with all quotes from travel consultants following uniform standards. This ensures there will be no unexpected price hikes during the trip, no forced shopping stops, and no discrepancies between advertised and actual accommodations.

③ Where Is the Agency Based? Local Agencies vs. Mainland China Operators vs. Online Platforms

When signing up for a tour to Tibet, you’ll generally come across three types of travel agencies, each with its own pros and cons:

Types of Travel Agencies Advantages Important Information Before Registering
A travel agency in your area
Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, etc.
Registration is convenient, communication is easy, and you can pay in local currency and sign contracts locally. Most tours are organized in collaboration with local tour operators in mainland China. If the local operator changes with each tour, there may be inconsistencies in quality and communication. Before signing up, be sure to ask: Which company will be hosting the group once we arrive in Tibet?
Mainland China Local Travel Agency With local connections and resources, unexpected situations—such as flight changes or altitude sickness—can be handled on-site. Make sure to verify whether a formal travel contract has been signed, whether the company has its own office and team in Tibet, and whether it will subcontract the tour to other local tour operators.
Online Platforms / Distributors Wide selection and easy price comparison Many of these are tours resold by other travel agencies, which can easily lead to subcontracting or last-minute group mergers, making it unclear who is responsible when problems arise.

CITS Global Travel—China2Go is a local travel agency based in mainland China. Many Taiwanese customers worry, “We’ve never met in person—is this really reliable?” We’ll address this concern clearly at the end of this article.

④ On-Trip Support and Emergency Response

Upon landing at Nyingchi Airport, our local guide was already waiting at the exit.

Flights and weather conditions in Tibet are highly variable, and last-minute changes are common.
A good travel agency should, at a minimum, meet the following criteria:

  • 24-Hour Travel Assistance
  • Real-time Status Updates from Tour Guides and Groups
  • The tour guide has received training in high-altitude first aid, and a first-aid kit and oxygen equipment are provided on the bus.
  • A dedicated driver familiar with road conditions in Tibetan areas and a local team

When choosing a tour, try asking the travel agency directly, “What would you do if we experienced altitude sickness or if a flight were canceled?” Their response will reveal how professional they are.

⑤ Itinerary Design and Guide Expertise

A tour guide from China2Go holds a microphone and gives a tour to guests on the Tibet tour.
Along the way, the tour guide explains Tibetan culture and the history of the monasteries, ensuring that guests do more than just take photos and check in at popular spots.

Itinerary design is the best indicator of a travel agency’s quality. A well-designed Tibet itinerary strikes a balance between “a wealth of attractions” and “a comfortable pace,” ensuring that travelers aren’t constantly rushing from one spot to the next just to check things off a list, but instead have genuine time to experience the culture and nature of Tibet.

Itineraries from professional travel agencies typically have the following characteristics:

  • The tempo of "Highland" is well-balanced:We keep daily travel distances and elevation changes within safe limits, and pair them with appropriate accommodations and transportation to give your body time to adjust.
  • Accommodations by Category:Choose safe and clean hotels based on local conditions, while balancing scenic views and comfort.
  • Choosing Which Attractions to Visit:We don't just visit popular photo spots; we also include culturally significant Tibetan temples and off-the-beaten-path destinations.
  • The tour guide was very professional:Be familiar with Tibetan culture, religious rituals, and high-altitude safety guidelines, and be able to handle emergencies calmly.
  • Get the latest local news:We are authorized to handle entry permits for Tibet and have a local team, so we are immediately informed of any policy changes.

When choosing a travel agency, it’s a good idea to take a closer look at the details of their itineraries and hotel descriptions.
A truly experienced team won't just emphasize low prices,Instead, they’ll clearly explain why the trip is organized this way, what the daily highlights are, and give you an honest assessment of the accommodations.

Tibet Travel Agency FAQ

Q1. Which travel agency is the best for traveling to Tibet in 2027?

When choosing a travel agency in Tibet, we recommend considering these three things first:Do you have official authorization to arrange entry permits for Tibet? Do you have your own local team in Tibet? Does the contract specify that you will not visit any shopping stores?.
CITS Global Travel—China2Go builds on CITS’s 70 years of brand experience...With its own team of Tibetan tour guides and drivers, small groups of 4 to 10 people, hotels equipped with oxygen throughout the trip, and a "pure sightseeing, no shopping" policy—with a penalty of 5,000 RMB for breach of contract—this is the choice of many travelers from Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan when visiting Tibet.

Q2. What are the reviews like for CITS Global Travel—China2Go? Is it reliable?

The most direct way is to see what past guests have to say. We’ve compiled the handwritten feedback forms from our tour participants, along with comments from Facebook and Threads,Professional tour guides, safe driving, and a tour focused solely on sightseeing with no shopping stopsThese are the three things guests mention most often.
For the full review, see:CITS Global Travel Reviews | Authentic Feedback from Tibet Tour Participants
In addition, all contracts are regulated by the Chinese Ministry of Culture and Tourism and uploaded to the official system. Before registering, you can also attend an online information session to discuss the details directly with a representative.

Q3. Can Taiwanese people travel independently in Tibet, or do they have to join a tour group?

Taiwanese citizens are currently not permitted to travel to Tibet independently. Travelers from Taiwan and those holding foreign passports must obtain an "Entry Permit for Tibet" through an authorized travel agency and must travel as part of a group accompanied by a licensed tour guide for the entire duration of their stay.
This is because the Entry Permit for Tibet can only be obtained through a travel agency; individuals cannot apply for it on their own. Checkpoints along the route will also verify travel documents and guide information, and to travel to areas such as Ali and Mount Everest, additional documents—such as a border pass—must be obtained.
Travelers from Hong Kong and Macau do not need to obtain an Entry Permit for Tibet and can travel independently; however, since Tibet’s average elevation exceeds 3,000 meters, it is recommended that first-time visitors join a small group tour led by a professional guide so that they can receive assistance if they experience altitude sickness.
CITS Global Travel - China2Go’s small-group tours to Tibet depart with as few as 4 people, and we handle all the necessary entry permits and documents for you.

Q4. How much does a group tour to Tibet cost, roughly? Why do prices vary so much from one tour operator to another?

The price differences for Tibet tours mainly stem fromAccommodation category, transportation, group size, and whether there are shopping stops. Some low-cost tours recoup their costs through shopping stops and optional excursions, so while they may seem cheap at first glance, the actual expenses aren't necessarily lower.
CITS Global Travel - China2Go’s Tibet tours feature accommodations at oxygen-supplied hotels throughout the trip, small group sizes of 4 to 10 people, and no stops at shopping venues. Prices vary depending on the itinerary and duration; for example, the 15-day Ali North Line + Kora tour starts at 25,800 RMB. For the actual costs of each itinerary, please visit the itinerary page or contact a travel consultant directly.

Q5. Which tour route do you recommend for a group tour in Tibet?

My First Trip to Tibet...I recommend starting with an 8-day Tibet itinerary: Lhasa, Yamdrok Lake, Shigatse, all the way to Everest Base Camp, staying at Hilton hotels throughout the trip.
I want to see the peach blossoms...You can choose the 11-day Nyingchi Peach Blossom Festival tour, which runs only from late March to early April each year.
I've been to Tibet, and I want to go even further...You might consider the 15-day "Ali Northern Route + Mount Kailash Circuit" tour, which takes you on a single journey to Mount Kailash, the Guge Kingdom, and the Three Sacred Lakes.
Setting Out in Winter...and then there is the Hilton Blessing Event on the 9th for the Festival of the Lamp.
All tours are led by CITS Global Travel—China2Go’s in-house tour guides and drivers.

Q6. When is the best time to visit Tibet?

October 4 through 10This is the peak tourist season in Tibet, with relatively stable weather in May, June, September, and October, making it ideal for first-time visitors. From late March to early April, you can visit Nyingchi to see the peach blossoms.
Winter is actually a great time to visit Tibet. From November through January of the following year, the sky is exceptionally clear, often staying blue all day long, making this one of the best seasons for viewing Mount Everest. With fewer tourists in winter, you can visit the Potala Palace and the Jokhang Temple without the crowds, and prices are relatively affordable; during this time, Tibetan pilgrims from all over the region come to Lhasa, making the scenes of prayer wheel spinning and prostrations even more prevalent than in summer. The Tibetan Lunar Festival of Lights also takes place in winter, when you can see monasteries lit up with countless butter lamps. Lhasa enjoys plenty of sunshine during the day, but there is a significant temperature difference between morning and evening, so choosing a hotel with oxygen supply and heating will make your stay much more comfortable.
To learn more about why you should visit Tibet in winter, check out:5 Reasons to Visit Tibet in Winter | The Ultimate Guide to Winter Attractions in Tibet 2027
Please note that around February and March each year, the processing of entry permits for foreign and Taiwanese travelers to Tibet may be temporarily suspended. If you plan to travel during this period, please check with a representative first.

Q7. When Taiwanese travelers sign up for a tour to Tibet, should they pay in New Taiwan Dollars or Renminbi?

Either one is fine.
If you pay in New Taiwan Dollars, you will sign a standard form contract for Taiwan; if you pay in Renminbi, you will sign the “Domestic Group Tour Contract” for Mainland China, which is regulated by the Chinese Ministry of Culture and Tourism and uploaded to the official system.
When you register, just tell the representative which method you'd like to use.

Q8. What safety and health precautions should I take when traveling to Tibet?

The most important thing is to prevent altitude sickness.: After arriving, get some rest, drink plenty of water, and take it step by step—avoid drastic changes in elevation in a single day.
All CITS Global Travel - China2Go tour vehicles (excluding Jeeps) are equipped withOxygen Cylinders and Diffusion-Based Oxygen Delivery...The tour guides have received high-altitude first aid training, and all accommodations are at hotels that provide oxygen, allowing your body time to gradually acclimate.

Q9. Which airport is the most convenient for traveling to Tibet?

The most common route is to fly via Chengdu to Lhasa Gonggar Airport., with a travel time of about two hours and the most frequent departures.
If you want to acclimate by starting at a lower altitude, you can fly to Milin Airport in Nyingchi and then travel overland to Lhasa. For the return trip, in addition to flying, you can take the Qinghai-Tibet Railway to Xining and enjoy the high-altitude scenery along the way.
It generally takes 30 to 45 days to obtain a Tibet Entry Permit; during peak season, it is recommended to submit your application two months in advance.; Please do not purchase airline tickets until approval is granted; check with a representative regarding your flight first.
